Ready to Bring Home a New Furry Friend? Here’s How to Choose

Who doesn’t love animals? The most popular ones to own as pets in the United States are dogs and cats. If you are planning on buying yourself a new furry friend then obviously you need to conduct extensive research and find the one that’s right for you. Until you find the ideal pet, buying one is ill-advised. You shouldn’t bring an animal into your home unless you are confident you can care for it. You need to research it before you can be confident of this.

Here’s how to choose a furry friend:

Type of Animal

The first thing that you need to think about is the type of animal that you were going to buy. Do you want a cat or a dog? Of course, there are other alternatives although cats and dogs tend to be the most popular. You can of course buy hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, Guinea pigs, and other types of animals, even exotic ones. For some exotic animals, you do need a licence, however. To decide which type of animal you want to buy, first think about your experience. If you have never owned an animal before then it is a bad idea to buy a big breed of dog. First-timers might be better off buying cats or smaller animals like those quoted above. Exotic animals are only really ideal for individuals with lots of space and a lot of experience handling animals of that kind. Buying an animal you are inexperienced with, around those you are familiar with, can lead to you having a bad experience and ultimately getting rid of them, which is bad for their health.

Breed of Animal

Next, think about the breed of the animal that you are going to buy. For example, do you want English Labrador puppies or Persian kittens? There are many different breeds of animals. Breeds are like subcategories underneath the umbrella of species. Some breeds are much more expensive than others. If you do not have a lot of money, for example, then you would be better off buying an animal that is not classified into a specific breed. For dogs, these are mongrels and cats, moggies. Mongrels and moggies are a lot cheaper than purebred animals. That said, mongrels and moggies tend to experience more health problems than pure-bred ones do which means they can be more expensive to keep in the long run.

Size of House

The last thing you need to think about (and perhaps the most important) is the size of your home. If you don’t have a very large house then bringing a big animal into it is unwise. A lot of people buy very large dogs as puppies then as they grow, realise they cannot keep them. A large house is needed for big animals so they can move around freely. Likewise, a large backyard is needed too. Make sure you have these things before you buy an animal lest they live its life in misery.

A pet can be a lot of fun to own. If you plan on buying yourself one, conduct extensive research and find the type that’s right for you. You can do that by taking the things outlined here into consideration.
